As of October 31, 2017, more than 148,088 flu shot-related reports were made to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). Out of these reports, there were 1,399 related deaths, 11,008 hospitalizations and 2,802 related disabilities. Some of the flu shot’s short-term side effects include: 

1. Low-grade fevers
2. Headaches
3. Hoarseness
4. Sore throat
5. Coughs
6. Fatigue
7. Aches and muscle pains
8. Soreness, redness or swelling where vaccine was given
9. Itchiness and toughness where the vaccine was given (for people given an intradermal flu shot)
10. Fainting
11. Nasal congestion
12. Nausea

Some people may also have severe allergic reactions to the flu shot. These may appear a few minutes or hours after administration of the vaccine. If you can, watch out for the following allergy symptoms that may develop after a flu shot: 

• Wheezing
• Swelling in the face, particularly around the eyes or lips
• Hives
• Breathing difficulties
• Weakness or dizziness
• Paleness

If you’re wondering how long these side effects last, it’s often for one to two days. However, there are long-term side effects of the flu shot that may cause adverse health conditions and pain for increased periods of time.

An example is shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA), one of two recent vaccine reactions added to the NVICP Vaccine Injury Table (VIT).  Around 202 people were compensated by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program in 2016 for SIRVA caused by different vaccines. 

Experiencing shoulder pain after a flu shot is quite common, alongside other reactions such as nerve damage, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff tears. The U.K.’s NHS notes as well that you may experience a sore arm after getting a flu shot. 

ABC Action News journalist Ashley Glass learned about these side effects the hard way. After an annual flu shot in October 2017, she experienced difficulty moving her arm. In her Facebook post detailing the incident, commenters were quick to point out that she may be experiencing a flu shot side effect. 

As mentioned below in the children’s side effects section, the flu vaccine may increase your seizure risk. The CDC notes that a higher risk of fever-caused seizures is possible after a child is given a flu shot  with the pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) and/or DTaP vaccine. To prevent this, inform your doctor before the flu vaccination if you have a child who has experienced a seizure. 

Lastly, the flu vaccine may cause extensive damage to your body’s nervous system, and predispose you to the following conditions: 

•Brain and nerve disorders: Flu shots have been linked to brain inflammation and encephalopathy, Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM), optic neuritis, partial facial paralysis, brachial plexus neuropathy and vasculitis.

•Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS):  A flu shot can slightly raise your risk for GBS, with estimates being one or two cases per 1 million vaccinations.  GBS, which can develop two to four weeks after the vaccination, is an autoimmune disorder that may target your peripheral nervous system, trigger temporary or permanent paralysis and other chronic health problems, or even cause death.

39-year-old Lindsey Day is said to have been “perfectly fit and healthy” just before he received immunizations for the flu and whooping cough. Just three days following the vaccines, the Sydney man passed away. The family is blaming the vaccines on his death and considering legal action.

Saint Vincent settles federal lawsuit filed by workers who claimed Religious Discrimination.



Saint Vincent Hospital has agreed to rehire six former employees it fired after they refused to get flu shots in late 2013 and early 2014 due to their religious beliefs.

The Erie hospital also will provide about $300,000 in back pay and compensatory damages to the employees as part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of the workers by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in September. A consent decree that ended the case and detailed the settlement terms was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Erie.

The commission had claimed Saint Vincent violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it fired the six workers, who refused to be vaccinated after the hospital implemented a mandatory flu vaccination policy for all employees. The 2017-2018 flu season is turning out to be one of the worst outbreaks in recent history. Already this year, the flu has claimed the lives of dozens of children and hospitalized countless others. In the midst of the turmoil and sickness, however, the medication to treat the flu—Tamiflu—is also reportedly claiming lives.

As this is one of the worst outbreaks, the makers of Tamiflu are seeing record sales. However, this is not good for the children whose parents are coming forward to expose the horrendous side effects caused by the medicine which—in some instances—have proven to be far worse than getting the flu.

Oseltamivir, the antiviral medication marketed as Tamiflu, is used to treat flu symptoms caused by influenza virus in patients who have had symptoms for less than 2 days. While there are plenty of common side-effects ranging from hives to difficulty breathing, some of the less common side effects have parents crying foul.

Some people using Tamiflu have had rare side effects of sudden confusion, delirium, hallucinations, unusual behavior, or self-injury. Adding to the ominous nature of these side-effects is the fact that these symptoms have occurred most often in children.
